A.M Cassandre: Art Deco Designer and Poster Artist

Introduction

After doing some research on Art Deco, I came across A.M Cassandre, who is a poster artist who helped to define the Art Deco style. Cassandre believed in the combination of word and imagery and his process was an important contribution to graphic design. Cassandre defined a poster as a "means of communication between the seller and public".

Cassandre's Work

Cassandre was known for his elegant style of decorative art, design and architecture. His early style was generally influenced by cubism and surrealism with the combination of Art Nouveau's stylized curves and geometric figures.

His posters for the 'Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits' and 'Dubonnet' wine company were among the first posters created in a certain way because he intended them to be seen and comprehended from moving vehicles. He started off the concept of a 'Serial Poster', which is a group of posters that convey an entire idea through rapid succession.
