Introduction
After collecting my survey results and finding out that 'art deco' won, I have decided to delve deeper and do my own research into what the design style entails.
What is it?
Art deco started to take off during the 1920s. This style influenced all areas of design such as architecture, interior design, industrial design, fashion and jewellery, painting, graphics and film. The art deco style includes geometric shapes, chrome glass, shiny fabric and mirrors, stylised images of aeroplanes, cars, cruise liners and skyscrapers, nature motifs of shells, sunrises and flowers.
The Characteristics of Art Deco design
Overall this design symbolised glamour, elegance and functionality. Each of these factors distilled Art Deco design into a number of recognizable stylistic characteristic:
- Symmetry
- Symmetry
- Layered shapes
- Intricate line art
- Rectilinear geometry
- Aerodynamic curves
- Metallic colour scheme like gold and chrome
Art Deco is above all a bold style, happily drawing attention to itself. It mirrors the 1920s spirit by capturing the modern conveniences such as the electric light bulb transformed major cities into flashy spectacles. Art Deco design manages to capture this spectacle through size, contrast and adventurous decoration. In a more literal interpretation, triangular shaoesm tapering up from the bottom outward, are often used in the design to mimic stage lights. Or they can be pushed outwards as sunburst, making the whole product radiate.
The nested traingles create pseudo stage lights.
